Piano and music production for teens and adults

Learn. Create.
Produce.

Play the songs you love by ear. Make your own tracks in Fender Studio. In person in Charlottesville, and online with a live call-in every week.

Ages 12 and up · After school, evenings and weekends · No sheet music required

A teacher leans over a desk of teenagers making music on laptops with small MIDI keyboards in a bright Charlottesville studio

Four ways in

Pick your sound.

Some students come to play the songs they hear in their heads. Some come to make the beat underneath. Most end up doing both. Start wherever you are.

An adult student laughs as her teacher shows her a chord at the piano

Keys

Piano by Ear

Hear a song, find the key, play the chords. No sheet music, no years of scales first.

A teenage girl in headphones builds a beat on a laptop and a MIDI keyboard with glowing pads

Teen Producer Lab

A weekly crew of six. Make beats, learn keys, premiere your track at Showcase Night.

How it works

From first lesson to first track.

No audition and no experience needed. Your teacher meets you where you are and builds the plan around the music you actually listen to.

1

Try a free lesson

Thirty minutes in the studio or on video. Play us something, or nothing at all. We'll find your starting point.

2

Get your path

Piano by ear, production, or both. You get a level, a weekly practice plan and songs picked for you.

3

Learn, call in, show off

Lessons every week, a live call-in when you're stuck, and a stage at Showcase Night when you're ready.

Why it works

Real skills. Real music. Real progress.

We teach the way working musicians actually learn: by listening, copying, experimenting and playing with other people.

Ear first

Learn chords and progressions as sounds you recognise, so you can pick out songs from the radio, from church or from your playlist.

Real software

Students produce in Fender Studio, a full professional DAW that also has a free version, so practice at home looks just like lessons.

Live every week

Group call-ins on the Online Hub keep you moving. Bring a question, a song or a half-finished beat.

Feedback on your work

Upload a playing video or a track and get notes from a teacher: what's working, and the one thing to fix next.

A crew to grow with

Small groups, a friendly community and monthly beat challenges. Musicians get better faster together.

Something to show for it

Every season ends with Showcase Night: students play live and premiere what they made for family and friends.

A teenager plays keyboard and another runs a beat from a laptop on stage at a student showcase while families film on their phones

Showcase Night

Your track. Live. Loud.

Every season our students take the stage to play, perform and premiere the songs they produced.

A teenage son shows his dad a beat he made on a laptop, both laughing

For parents

The screen time you'll actually be glad about.

Your teen is already on a laptop. Here, it's how they learn to make something: rhythm, harmony, patience, and the confidence to play their own work in front of people.

  • Small groups of no more than six, with a vetted teacher
  • Sessions after school, in the evenings and on weekends, so it fits round school and sports
  • A short progress note after every month
  • Studio gear provided. A laptop and headphones are enough at home
  • Adults welcome too. Plenty of parents end up taking lessons
