Questions
Frequently asked
What ages do you teach?
Teens from 12 and adults of every age. The Teen Producer Lab is for 12 to 18, and Summer Beat Camp takes ages 11 to 16. Younger and keen? Get in touch and we'll talk.
Do I need any experience?
None. Most students start as total beginners. Your free trial lesson tells us where to start.
What's a weekly call-in?
A live group video session on the Online Hub, led by a teacher. You can ask questions, play for the group, or share your screen and get feedback on a track. Sessions are recorded if you can't make it.
What equipment do I need?
For piano, a keyboard with 61 or more keys. For production, a laptop and headphones, ideally with a small MIDI keyboard. In the Charlottesville studio, everything is provided.
Why Fender Studio?
It's a professional DAW that's friendly for beginners and has a free version for practising at home, so nobody has to buy software to get started. If you already use another DAW, that's fine too.
When are lessons?
Modern Music Hub is an extracurricular program, so we work around school and work. Weekday sessions run from 5 PM into the evening, and we teach on Saturdays and Sundays. Online call-ins are on weekday evenings and weekends too.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the program and how often you come. Email us and we'll send current rates, along with a time for your free trial lesson.
What's the best way to reach you?
Email. We're not able to take calls between 8 AM and 5 PM, but we read every email and reply within a day.
Can I switch programs?
Yes. Switch or pause any time. Just email us.
What if I miss a lesson?
Give us 24 hours' notice and we'll reschedule your private lesson. Group sessions and call-ins are recorded in the Online Hub.
